Cracking the GP Rating Interview: What Boards Really Look For

It's rarely about textbook answers. Here's the mindset, presence and preparation that set successful GP Rating candidates apart.

The GP Rating interview is often the first real test of whether an aspirant can carry themselves like a future seafarer. Panels are not simply checking what you know — they are reading how you think, how you respond under pressure, and whether you genuinely understand life at sea.

Preparation should therefore go beyond memorising definitions. Practise explaining concepts in your own words, rehearse how you introduce yourself, and be ready to talk honestly about why you chose the Merchant Navy. Confidence built on real understanding always reads better than rehearsed lines.

Finally, treat every mock interview as the real thing. The more you simulate the pressure of the room, the calmer you'll be when it actually matters.
